The Event
Experience teaches us that when golfers play in a charity tournament they are looking for three things – (1) an event and charity worthy of their time, money, and support, (2) an event that is well-managed and held at an exceptional golf venue, and (3) plenty of good food and drinks ready when you are. Fun, food, great golf, and great people. That’s what we have sought to build with the Salute The Troops Golf Classic.
What the tournament is not about is commercialism. We love the growing support we receive from the business community and the more business support we receive the more dollars we are able to contribute to the Fisher House. But, unlike many other events, you won’t see any commercial signs out on the tee boxes. In fact, the only thing you will see on tee boxes are American Flags. Our business supporters are “Patriot Patrons” and we provide them visibility by listing them on signage in the clubhouse, at Sgt. Recon’s Mess Hall Grill, at the post-golf luncheon, and on our web site. Business Patriot Patrons/$500 – Individual Patriot Patrons/$100. The other thing you won’t find out on the golf course is anyone asking you to reach into your pocket to purchase this or that or sign up for anything. Once you tee off, it’s all about the golf. That’s the way our Salute The Troops family of golfers like it and that’s the way it will stay.
We are also not the typical “celebrity” event. We certainly have our “celebrity” supporters. People like Mike Patrick from ESPN and former Washington Redskins radio announcer Frank Herzog. But, our veterans, wounded warriors, active duty military, and the American Patriots who come out to honor and support them are our celebrities.
Our event is unique and begins with the presentation of the Colors by a local uniformed Color Guard and the singing of the National Anthem by our good and talented friend Jimmy Payne. It ends with an awards luncheon with a featured guest speaker. ESPN Sportscaster Mike Patrick served as our guest speaker at the tournament’s inaugural event in 2009. In 2010, Brigadier General Alberto Jimenez, a Vietnam Veteran and commander of the Maryland National Guard, offered remarks. In 2011, Janet Grampp, manager of the Fisher House at Andrews Air Force Base spoke to the group.
And, we have something no other golf tournament has -- Sgt. Recon’s Mess Hall Grill. Free food and drinks all day. Our grill is up and running before you ever arrive to drop off your clubs and stays that way throughout the day. Our dogs, burgers, and other chow is hot, cooked right, and ready when you are (a separate BBQ lunch is held in the clubhouse during the post-golf awards ceremony). Jim and Jeremy man the grill and are two of the best in the business.
An exceptional event at a spectacular venue for a great cause. That’s the Salute The Troops Golf Classic.
